Testing Blueprint

There are five primary objectives for this unit. They address individual concepts and ideas as well as the relationships among the concepts.

Each objective has a test item included so students can be tested on the content. The test items can be used as pretests and/or posttests. Each test item has criteria that should be used to evaluate the test item. For example, when students are asked to write an essay, the criteria for evaluating the student’s essay is included. The objectives, corresponding tests and answer keys are listed below. Note, the tests have been provided in Microsoft Word so that you can easily customize the title, header format, etc. and to eliminate the web address reference that usually shows up at the bottom of a web page printout. (Inquiring student minds might otherwise find the answer key on this site.)

Objective 1

Given a list of 15 concepts, each student will identify a corresponding example or description. Students should correctly identify 12 of the concepts.

Objective 2

Given two or more key concepts, students will describe the relationship(s) between them and provide a novel example of each relationship.

Objective 3

Without access to notes or books, each student will identify and describe, in an essay, the three main building systems (building envelope, HVAC, lighting) and how they work together in a building.

Objective 4

Given an “empty” energy matrix and asked to recommend an energy resource, each student will explain their recommendation by doing the following:

  • Identify at least five resources
  • Identify each resource as renewable or non-renewable
  • State why the resource is renewable or non-renewable
  • State at least one drawback of the recommended resource

Objective 5

Given a lighting retrofit case study with data, each student will answer a series of questions about the retrofits as specified on the checklist.

Testing Blueprint

The blueprint below shows the weighting of each of the five instructional objectives in the unit. The middle column shows the how much each objective will be weighted on the final test. The last column gives the number of instructional days allotted for each objective. The number of instructional days equals more than 12 because some objectives span multiple lessons. In addition to the 12 instructional days, there will be one test day.
