This site outlines the various monitoring strategies that will be conducted as part of this program.

In order to determine the savings and efficiency of the photovoltaic and solar water heating systems installed under this program, instrumented monitoring will be conducted at the various sites.

Photovoltaic System Monitoring

Each photovoltaic system will be monitored for kWh production. A watt-hour meter with digital or easily read display will be installed at each system.

The installation of the watt-hour meter will be conducted as part of and during the solar system installation.

The system recipient will be required to record the above readings on a monthly basis and provide the figures to FSEC either through a form developed on this web site or via manuals means (e-mail or standard postal service). This information will be maintained on the VIEO/FSEC web site. Thereby all program managers, participants, and authorized interested parties will have access to this information.

Solar Water Heating System Monitoring

Each solar water heating system will be monitored for BTU production, kWh production from the solar system, hot water gallon usage, and kWh usage from either solar or auxiliary tank heating element.

This will require the installation of a BTU meter. This meter will be installed in conjunction with a flow meter in the cold line to the auxiliary water heater, and sensors attached to the cold line and hot out line. In addition, a standard kWh meter will be installed on those systems that incorporate an auxiliary electric water heater.

The installation of the flow meter and auxiliary tank watt-hour meter will be conducted by the solar system installer as part of and during the solar system installation. The installation contractor will also be responsible for procurement of the below listed monitoring equipment. The BTU meter and sensor placement will be conducted by FSEC and VIEO program staff.

The BTU meter will provide digital display of the kWh's and gallons used. The auxiliary water heater watt-hour meter will also provide readable numbers for determining the kWh's used.
