The SunSmart program is the first public utility-based program in Florida that actually allows customers to choose what kind of electricity they want to purchase. The SunSmart program uses partnerships with Florida’s municipal utilities and other interest groups to offer a unified, low-cost solution to providing electricity customers with a green energy option. It gives utilities the help they need to become familiar with new renewable energy technologies like photovoltaics (PV), and it educates consumers about the benefits of using these technologies.

Program Goals:

  • To educate Florida consumers about the environmental costs of their energy choices and the benefits of using clean energy sources like solar power.

  • To provide Florida consumers with a simple, yet effective way to make a difference in their local communities by choosing to purchase electricity made from renewable energy sources.

  • To provide Florida schools with the educational tools necessary to help students become acquainted with renewable energy technologies.

  • To assist Florida’s municipal electric utilities in overcoming barriers to providing renewable energy to their customers.
