BAIHP Partner Unveils First Net Zero Energy Home
Building America partner, Tommy Williams Homes (TWH) held a ribbon cutting ceremony January 28, and a public open house on January 30, for their first, net zero energy home. This Longleaf Community home located in Gainesville, FL is the first zero energy home constructed by a production builder in Florida. The events attracted more than 375 people and media personnel. TWH is currently constructing their second zero energy home for the “first time home buyer.”

FSEC Helps Partners at NAHB International Builders Show (IBS) 2010 for the 6th Year in a Row
FSEC's Building America Builder Partners, Palm Harbor Homes (Tempe Plant) and Nationwide Homes participated in this years’ IBS Show Village by showcasing energy-efficient and sustainable strategies while achieving Builders Challenge and ENERGY STAR compliance.  For the 6th year in a row, FSEC assisted with technical and systems design support, which also earned all three show homes NAHB Green Home Program Certifications (pending permanent site inspections).

Newly Designed Fan Blade, The "Gossamer Classic"
UCF and FSEC is currently licencing a new ceiling fan blade technology to a U.S. manufacturer. The "Gossamer Classic,"  is a fan blade designed with the bottom of the blade flat and conventional in appearance. However, the upper portion of the blade has a true airfoil, which FSEC testing showed was able to increase flow by 20% in side-by-side testing compared to conventional flat blades. While not as good as the 40% improvement seen from the tapered, twisted airfoils in the earlier Gossamer Wind ceiling fans, this new design opens up opportunities to manufacture ceiling fans with a completely conventional appearance from underneath the fan while still providing 20% better air moving performance.

Investigating Solutions to Wind Washing Issues in 2-Story Florida Homes: Phase 1
Are you having trouble keeping your two-story home cool in the summer and warm in the winter? The first phase of a study to identify air and thermal barrier failures caused by wind washing in two-story homes has just been completed. The study found that repairing these failures saved as much as 33% cooling energy and was cost-effective. Annual cooling energy savings averaged 15.3% and peak demand savings averaged 12.6% for six homes after wind washing repairs.

NightCool: Nocturnal Radiation Cooling Concept - Long Term Performance Evaluation
This report describes the experimentally evaluated potential of a novel residential night cooling concept. NightCool uses a home's metal roof under a sealed attic as a large radiator to the night sky to provide nocturnal cooling. Data is provided for two full cooling seasons.

Miscellaneous Electricity Loads Report Updated
This report addresses the ever increasing percentage of whole house energy use attributable to miscellaneous electricity loads and major appliances. The authors makes recommendations for revising the reference standards. Mechanisms are provided for expanding the number and types of lighting and major appliances that are considered to be rated features of a home.

Southern Energy Efficiency Center (SEEC) Final Report
SEEC created many new resources to facilitate dissemination of information on high-performance, beyond-code buildings via new workshops, documents, conferences, Web sites and meetings. Many building professionals learned about energy-efficient techniques and DOE Building Technology programs.
