As part of FSEC's teacher and student program, the Center hosts several special events throughout each year. In addition, FSEC provides professional development opportunities for Florida teachers in the areas of solar and hydrogen technologies, environmental issues, and instructional strategies for science classrooms, using the inquiry approach.
These web pages are intended to be resources for these special educational events. The most popular of these student events are as follows.
Junior
Solar Sprint An annual competition in which middle and junior high students are challenged to design, build, and race model cars powered entirely by solar energy. |
Hydrogen
Sprint A high school competition that was developed to provide opportunities for students to explore hydrogen power with a hands-on design component and a multimedia presentation. |
Energy
Innovations Energy Innovation is a real world design competition. It was developed to provide a full-scale photovoltaic design challenge for middle school and high school students to give them an opportunity to explore the growing technology of photovoltaics. |
South
East Regional Middle School Science Bowl A two part competition consisting of an academic and engineering component; the academic competition is a fast-paced question and answer contest. From the academic competition, the top eight teams receive a hydrogen fuel cell to construct a hydrogen car for demonstration at the FSEC Earth Day Open House, April 18, 2009. |
EnergyWhiz
Olympics An annual event that is composed of the Junior Solar Sprint, Hydrogen Sprint, and the conclusion of the Florida Middle School Science Bowl. The EnergyWhiz Olympics is held in early May. The public is encouraged to attend at no charge. |
Youth
Energy Solutions (YES) SummitThe YES Summit is the culminating event of a yearlong energy program for K-12 schools. The purpose of the program is to educate teachers and students about renewable energy and current energy issues, as well as provide a forum for students to share their energy research. |
Exemplary
Projects in Energy and Conservation (EPEC) AwardsThis program recognizes Brevard County students for conducting outstanding research in energy and/or energy conservation. |
